Schengen Visas 2027: Stricter Restrictions and Rising Fees Institutionalize Border Taxation and Claim Unrefundable North African Funds

** Mustafa Abyad
Moroccan travelers face an increasingly uncertain outlook as 2027 approaches, the scheduled date for the implementation of structural revisions to the European Union’s Schengen visa policy, These pivotal changes further complicate a journey that Moroccans already experience as a daily gauntlet of administrative and financial hurdles

The most contentious issue remains the current framework forcing applicants to pay non-refundable fees of €90 for adults and €45 for children, on top of third-party service center charges, effectively turning a visa application into an expensive gamble with no guaranteed outcome, Periodic EU reviews threaten to raise these amounts under the guise of inflation adjustments and wage shifts in member states, directly inflating the cost of potential rejections and placing an added financial strain on Moroccan citizens

Although Brussels emphasizes a transition to full digitization and unified platforms aimed at facilitating longer-term, multiple-entry visas for select groups such as business travelers and top talents, the core of these reforms remains anchored in heightened security protocols and targeted restrictive measures, reinforcing the perception that digital streamlining is merely a facade to intensify surveillance and deepen financial and administrative inequality.
